Inner Democracy.1: Democracy isn’t just “out there,” it is also “in here”

In this series of essays, in the 250th year of the United States of America, I will develop the idea of Inner Democracy – a democracy of mind and heart and soul – to complement our outer democracy.

We are at a crisis of democracy, there is extreme polarization, accusations of “the other side” being “fascist” or “socialist/communist,” and levels of mistrust in each other and in our democratic institutions that have not been seen in generations.

As Parker Palmer has written, in Healing the Heart of Democracy: The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit (2011),

“If American democracy fails, the ultimate cause will not be a foreign invasionor the power of big money or the greed and dishonesty of some elected officials or a military coup or the internal communist/socialist/fascist takeover that keeps some Americans up at night. It will happen because we—you and I—became so fearful of each other, of our differences and of the future, that we unraveled the civic community on which democracy depends, losing our power to resist all that threatens it and calls it back to its highest form,” (8).

We think of democracy as a form of government, as something outside of the individual person, but Palmer reminds us that democracy is ultimately about “you and I,” and not about something “out there.” Democracy is a “government by the people,”[1] and we are the people. The kind of democracy that Palmer envisions, one that is “worthy of the human spirit,” is the kind of democracy that moves us from Me to We. This Journey from Me to We is a difficult one, and it starts inside each of us.

Jeremy David Engels, in his book, On Mindful Democracy: A Declaration of Interdependence to Mend a Fractured World, defines “true democracy” as “ working together to care for each other and for the life we share,” (4). Democracy, for Engels, is about collaborating and caring, not just for ourselves but for our shared life together on our only ecosystem of the Earth.

There is a crisis of democracy in what we even mean by “democracy.” Is democracy a libertarian ethos of being able to maximize one’s own life, liberty, and, happiness, regardless of the consequences to others and the environment; or, is democracy a higher, spiritual calling of caring and collaboration?

Engels brings our focus on democracy from the individual to the community through synthesizing the spiritual traditions of yoga, Buddhism, and Christianity.  He draws on  Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh’s, “interbeing,” an intellectual/spiritual understanding of the interconnectedness of life, and the Christian community building of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “beloved community,” which then leads to democratic action. Engels re-writes the Declaration of Independence into a Declaration of Interdependence, recognizing the inherent interconnectedness of life.

Mindful democracy is a pathway and practice for developing the experience of inner democracy which can then be practiced in its outer form as building the beloved community and democratic action in the world. Inner democracy is an inner experience within the individual that can then lead to an outer democratic citizenship and government. We can think of inner democracy as a variety of spiritual democracy.

Steven Herrmann has written about the idea of “spiritual democracy:”

“Adopting the big idea of Spiritual Democracy, the realization of oneness of humanity with the universe and all its forces, can help people feel joy, peace, and interconnectedness on an individual basis. It can also inspire us to undertake sacred activism, the channeling of such forces into callings that are compassionate, just, and of equitable heart and conscience, and give us some tools to start solving some of these grave global problems, while uniting people on the planet.”[2]

Spiritual democracy, as defined by Herrmann, is founded upon an experience or realization of “oneness” and “interconnectedness.” He believes that this experience of inner democracy can lead to outer action, “sacred activism.”

Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) and I wrote about Spiritual Democracy in our book, Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality. We drew upon Herrmann’s ideas and combined these with Joseph’s perspectives, we spoke about the “inner journey of the democratic shaman,” and summarized a version of the Hiawatha story about Bringing the New Mind of the Great Peace. We made this chapter available as a free pdf download.

In a Becoming a True Human podcast interview with Jeremy David Engels, Chris Smith and I spoke with him about his book, On Mindful Democracy, and ideas about spiritual democracy, mystical democracy, inner democracy, and he had an idea of putting together a group of writers and thinkers to talk about The Varieties of Democratic Experience, with a nod to William James’ Varieties of Religious Experience.

I would like to further develop some ideas around inner democracy, drawing upon the work of other writers and some of my past writing. Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) and I wrote a chapter on “Spiritual Democracy” in our book, Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality. This draws heavily on Steven Herrmann’s work as well as Joseph’s teachings on peace and the idea that we are cosmic citizens. As Engels did, I drew upon Thich Nhat Hanh’s concept of interbeing and Martin Luther King Jr.’s beloved community in my book, Caring for Self & Others: Transforming Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Soul Loss, particularly in chapter ten, “Becoming Caring: Caring for All.” I am indebted to Jeremy David Engels for his book and for such an inspiring discussion in our podcast interview.

The perspective on democracy I would like to develop is the idea that the greater sense of “oneness” (or interbeing, interdependence, nondualism) that an individual experiences, the more fully they will be able to embrace the idea of democracy, which will lead to more vigorous outer expressions of democracy. A practice of inner democracy would, thus, be a contemplative path of the development of a conscious experience of oneness. This leads to a tripartite structure:

  1. Inner Experience of Oneness
  2. Idea of Democracy
  3. Outer Expression of Democracy

This tripartite structure follows the paths of the hero or heroine’s journey (as developed by Joseph Campbell), and the structure of initiation (separation/initiation/return) that Joseph Rael and I followed in Becoming Medicine. It also follows the structure of Jeremy David Engels’ book, On Mindful Democracy (xi-xii):

  1. Stand on Common Ground (Interbeing)
  2. Walk the Path of Interdependence in Community (Beloved Community)
  3. Practice Democracy with Hands and Heart

The idea of mindful or inner democracy can be grasped with the mind, but a mental concept may not be as resilient as an inner experience of democracy – of interbeing, oneness, interdependence – which then leads to outer expression. In this sense, mindful democracy can be a pathway to creating a foundation of inner democracy that then supports the idea and what Engels calls the “hands and heart” of outer democracy.

Inner Democracy could be taught through practices of reflection, contemplation, deliberation, dialogue, meditation, experiences in nature, or any experience in which the individual developed an expanded sense of self beyond the limitations of the ego and the flesh.

The movement of the individual from an identity of “me” to an identity of “we” underlies the inner practice of democracy.

Interestingly, there are many names for an experience of Oneness: nondualism, interbeing, unity, transpersonal, and nondifference, to name a few. There are also many names for interrelationship and interdependence:  I/Thou, Me/We, beloved community, and others.

One of the reasons I am excited about following this thread of Inner Democracy is that it provides a positive focus and practices that can be done irrespective of outer events in the world. In my Words Create Worlds series, I have focused more on resistance and opposition to words – uncaring words, words of Me-First, and words of fascism. Through Inner Democracy I am seeking to focus on building inner strength during difficult times. Perhaps chaotic and painful experiences in the outer world could even lead one to fall back upon practices of inner democracy. Inner democracy builds hope, resilience, post-burnout growth, post-traumatic growth. I agree with Jeremy David Engels’ view of democracy as caring and collaboration.

Ultimately, democracy isn’t something done “out there;” democracy is also, perhaps even originally, about doing something “in here,” in the inner space of the psyche, the work of cultivating inner democracy.

“government by the people, system of government in which the sovereign power is vested in the people as a whole exercising power directly or by elected officials; a state so governed,” 1570s, from French démocratie (14c.), from Medieval Latin democratia (13c.), from Greek dēmokratia “popular government,” from dēmos “common people,” originally “district” … + kratos “rule, strength.”

We Need Spiritual Democracy

Earth Child of Spiritual Democracy – Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow)

Now, more than ever, we need to reconnect to Spiritual Democracy.

War, violence, and aggression directed inward toward a country’s citizens and outward toward other nations and peoples – is not democracy.

In our book, Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality, Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) and I dedicate chapter 14 to the topic of Spiritual Democracy:

“Spiritual Democracy is a living connection, allowing the flow of spirituality through our lives, embracing the divinity in all creatures and the divinity of the Earth. Spiritual democracy is the way we treat others when we learn to see the divine in all things and that we, too, are part of divinity. It is a sacred way of being. Periodically, we forget that we are divine as we live in this world of matter and go through its trials and travails. We, as individuals, as well as we as people, need periodic renewal at the font of spiritual democracy. To seek renewal is to be a Seeker, yet so many “religious” people are becoming fundamentalists.” p.381

We have made this chapter available as a free pdf download for those who wish to renew themselves at the font of Spiritual Democracy.

“The Gates of Paradise: Shamanic Memories from an Indian Visionary” – in Parabola (Summer 2022)

Thanks to Parabola Magazine for excerpting a passage from our latest book, Becoming Who You Are: Beautiful Painted Arrow’s Life & Lessons for Children Ages 10-100.

The excerpt is entitled “The Gates of Paradise: Shamanic Memories from an Indian Visionary,” and is availabe online in Parabola Summer 2022 Edition with the theme of Ancestors. It is currently available online, but the whole issue is worth reading, with an articles on P. L. Travers, Vaclav Havel, Nelson Mandela, and many different topics on the theme of Ancestors.

The article also features two of Joseph Rael’s paintings, “Sage Woman becomes visible to – bless “the People,” and “Crystal Chamber,” which I’ll include below.

We are very happy that this book is getting some notice as it is an autobiography of Joseph’s life specifically aimed at passing on wisdom to the next generation, how fitting that it is in the Ancestors issue of Parabola: The Search for Meaning. The book was also recognized as a winner of the Paterson Prize for Books for Young People.

Being Medicine: A Conversation with David Kopacz & Marianela Medrano

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Marianela Medrano for her “What a Word is Worth” interview podcast series!

Being Medicine – we discussed many concepts from my last two books with Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) – Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality and Becoming Who You Are: Beautiful Painted Arrow’s Life & Lessons for Children Ages 10-100.

“Healing is a very simple thing – all you do is stop separating things – on whatever level the separation is occuring. Whether it is you viewing your body as separate from your mind or your spirit being separate from your mind, or you viewing yourself as separate from nature.” (David Kopacz)

I agree with Marianela – that whenever we talk – we could go on for 3 days! Such an interesting and heart-warming conversation! You can watch the video of the interview here.

Visit her Palabra Counseling page, her YouTube Channel, or watch my previous appearance on What a Word is Worth – A Conversation with Dr. David Kopacz & Anjana Deshpande, MBA, LCSW.

Becoming Who You Are: Beautiful Painted Arrow’s Life & Lessons for Children ages 10-100

Our next book has released! Becoming Who You Are: Beautiful Painted Arrow’s Life & Lessons for Children ages 10-100 is 130 pages of Joseph’s lessons for the people of the Earth. The book has 43 art works by Joseph and 14 photographs. We decided on the “ages 10-100” because we’ve also thought about writing a book for younger children. Also, this is our first book for children and it was challenging to bridge Joseph’s ideas and create a story that kids of all ages could enjoy.

The book is available through:

Itasca Books

Barnes & Noble

Amazon

Here is the back cover of the book:

Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) was born on the Southern Ute Reservation in 1935 and grew up at Picuris Pueblo in New Mexico. Joseph’s life took him across the country and around the world. After a vision in 1983, he built a Sound Peace Chamber, and then worked on building over 60 chambers around the world — leading to recognition by the United Nations for his work for world peace. Through his friend and co-author, David Kopacz MD, Joseph shares his life and lessons for people, young and old, growing through the transition from childhood into adulthood.

Joseph says that when he was sent to the Santa Fe Indian boarding school, they were trying to make American kids out of Indian kids, in this book, Joseph tells us, “I am trying to make Indian kids out of American kids.” Joseph passes on his wisdom and artwork to the next generations who will inherit the many problems that we have created in breaking the medicine wheel. Joseph tells us, “Let’s not leave the next generations in so much mystery about the physical and spiritual worlds. Let’s educate them from the beginning about the way of the shaman.” We are already born with everything we need, we just need to make sure that as we grow up, we don’t forget who we are.

Here are the generous endorsements we’ve received for the book:

In Becoming Who You Are, David Kopacz & Beautiful Painted Arrow (Joseph Rael), a Tiwa elder, have presented a series of marvelous stories for teenagers and young adults about how to become a human being.  This is timely wisdom from Native America, and Joseph’s past, for an age in which the guidance is confusing and truth is optional. The stories help readers sort through the possibilities for who they will become, while learning about and valuing culture & diversity. They describe Joseph’s lessons learned from boarding school, World War II, Pueblo Ceremonies, life on the reservation, and the process of creating sound chambers on guidance from spirits. I heartily recommend it for readers of all ages. We all need the wisdom that David & Joseph offer us.

Becoming Who You Are is a remarkable narrative that does not fall into prescribed categories—sharing Native American insights in an engaging and charming manner, always speaking to never down to kids as the rightful heirs to our planet. Joseph Rael and David Kopacz are healers and carriers of timeless wisdom working tirelessly for the betterment of life. They convey the becoming of being in lucid text combining autobiography, literature, ecology, spirituality, travelogue, history, magic and wisdom illuminated with beautiful art. Grounded, with shining optimism, this book meanders purposefully like a pure river sourced from a perennial spring of wisdom and will surely motivate kids to fall in love with the earth and—their own selves. In our ravaged age, the book reminds us of interconnectedness and that all that we need is—here—sacred and reallisten!

Becoming Who You Are: Beautiful Painted Arrow’s Life and Lessons for Children by Joseph E. Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) and David Kopacz MD is a book that shows us there are other important ways to teach that can speak to us all.  Through storytelling, Beautiful Painted Arrow lays out many of life’s core values.  We learn that the Tiwa word for God is Wah-Mah-Chi, which is also everything, and is the core to the love of learning which is the secret to being human.  This lovely book is written for children, but the authors freely admit that it was written for those in the middle between the two worlds of childhood and adulthood, so it really applies to us all.

As I read Becoming Who You Are, I envisioned myself sitting at the feet of an elder, asking him, “Tell me the story of your life―share your wisdom with me so that I may live it and one day share it with others.” Coming from years and years of Joseph’s sage wisdom and insights, this book is a beautiful invitation to not only learn, but also create your own story—through art, music, writing, reading—or however the spirit moves you.

Making America Healthy Again: Indigenous Perspectives on Land & Health – new article About Place Journal

Making America Healthy Again: Indigenous Perspectives on Land & Health

By David R. Kopacz, MD & Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow)

About Place Journal from the Black Earth Institute

We have a new article published at About Place Journal for their Geographies of Justice Issue – Volume VI, Issue III, May 2021! We are very excited to be published in this excellent and important journal.

We look at the relationships between land and health, private land/private health, and public land/public health.

When I spoke with Joseph about the topic of Geographies of Justice he immediately resonated with it. “All humans are looking for that – some justice, a just place where we can feel adjusted and feel safe. A just place is where you are adjusted to justice,” he said. Here are a few excerpts of Joseph’s thoughts on Geographies of Justice:

There are a lot of resources on the land that we take care of and they take care of us.

We need to start with the origin of the land, the place before everything broke apart – Pangea. We start at 1 – that’s Pangea. Then the scientists say the continents broke apart, and then people came out of Africa, then the Indians walked across the Bering Strait into the Americas – that’s how the scientists tell it.

We can learn from our environment, from our geographies. We cannot have justice unless we learn from our geographies. Pangea was created and all around it was Panthalassa, the great ocean. Then Pangea spilt and you had the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans eventually, and the Americas, North, South, Central, and then you had all these tribes in North America, and you had tribes in South America. For all these tribes, their religion was based on geography. The Eskimos had igloos and they would have ceremonies that reflect where they live, all the tribes would have ceremonies that reflect where they live.

There are different areas of land. You become your place before you live in your Mom and Dad’s house because they come from the land and you come from them. They teach you about the weather. The ceremonies are related to the climate of their place. First there was Pangea, and then it split and you had Europeans and Americans, but we are all from Pangea, we are all related...”

Justice is right here in the room with me and it is right there in the room with you and it is right there in the room for all the people on the planet – it is here.

Moon Shots

The full moon this month is called the Snow Moon. Last night it was hazy, almost like an eye in the sky, looking at this blurry year of the pandemic. The light from the moon is reflected from the sun. It seems like this past year we have been fumbling in the dark, not seeing clearly, struggling with the disruption of the pandemic and the political instability.

My friend, Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) is always telling me, “We need to teach people that they can go to the moon – not with rocket ships and technology – with their own consciousness through visions, like I do.” Joseph tells me he has been to the moon several times. One time he was sitting in his armchair in the Southwestern United States and then, pop, he was up in space, looking at someone who was aiming a camera at the moon and he was also seeing the Little People, the elves who were on the surface of the moon preparing it for human arrival. As Joseph looked at the scene, he realized that he was trilocating: he was the person with the camera and could zoom in and out, he was the observer seeing the person with the camera, and he was the person talking to the King of the Elves on the surface of the moon. The King of the Elves told him that the elves always go ahead to prepare reality for the arrival of humans and they were quite busy on the moon. Then, pop, Joseph was back sitting in his armchair.

While many might think this sounds fantastic, or it was just Joseph’s imagination, he is adamant that this is an important part of his teachings and that people need to stop being so focused on their self-imposed limitations of the separation of the body from the Earth and the Universe. He sees human evolution as moving away from technological travel to spiritual or metaphysical travel.

Joseph has always been guided by his visions, from his formative vision in the early 1980s of buidling Sound Peace Chambers all around the world (over 65 have been built on four continents), to his visions of us entering the 5th world, the new world, and his trips to the moon.

I stepped outside into the cool Seattle night and looked up at the moon and thought about how Joseph keeps telling me we need to teach people that they can travel without technology, that they can travel in non-ordinary, visionary reality. I looked up at the moon and I was the person the with camera, zooming in through the haze to see the moon more clearly. It is a hobby of mine, trying to hold my breath, steady the camera, and seeing how clear of a photo I can get with the zoom on my camera.

The Art of Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow)

I have been working with Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) since October of 2014. I’ve written about how I was working on a Hero’s Journey class for veterans, based on the concept of Joseph Campbell. I happened to find a copy of The Visionary: Entering the Mystic Universe of Joseph Rael (Beautiful Painted Arrow) by the late Kurt Wilt. Kurt had mentioned several times in his book that Joseph’s life’s path was like the Hero’s Journey. I wrote to Kurt, told him what I was doing with the veterans’ group and he thought Joseph might want to hear about what I was doing. Kurt gave me Joseph’s email address. We emailed back and forth a couple times and Joseph invited me to visit him at the Southern Ute Reservation in southern Colorado. On the way down there I was thinking maybe I could include a chapter in the Hero’s Journey work on indigenous approaches to healing. As I wrote up my notes that first night, I realized there was more than a chapter – it was a whole book! The next day I mentioned the idea of a book to Joseph, what to me was an epiphany must have already been obvious to Joseph, as he just off-handedly said, “That’s what I was thinking.”

This led to the publication of Walking the Medicine Wheel: Healing Trauma & PTSD. Actually, in working on that book, we turned in our first draft to Paulette Millichap, our publisher with Pointer Oak and Millichap Books. Her reaction was, “This is interesting, but where is the book for veterans?” Oh, no, I realized, Joseph took me down the rabbit hole and I chased his thoughts like birds and we ended up writing a book that went up, down, and all around, but we lost track of what we started writing. So we split the book into two books and I quickly wrote in more veteran specific chapters. The second book also expanded and expanded and became Becoming Medicine: Pathways of Initiation into a Living Spirituality. However, even that book – at 500 pages – still had things we cut out and that could go in other books!

One of the other book ideas that grew out of the other writing was a book on Joseph’s art. I had the idea of a book called Art Medicine (which is actually the sub-title of the Becoming Medicine color edition) that would focus specifically on art and visions.

To this end, with the idea of doing a book on art, vision, healing, and featuring Joseph’s art work, I’ve put out a call to anyone who has an original art work by Joseph. Joseph is very generous with his work and has given away the bulk of it. At some point, he did start getting digital copies of some of his work, for books, or for printing out posters that he would give away. He also gave me a set of 35 mm slide photos of some older work and I’ve had those digitalized to preserve.

If you have an art work by Joseph, please just take a camera photo of it and email it to me at davidkopacz369@gmail.com

I’ve gone through each of Joseph’s books and listed the art work that has been published and we have all or most of these on digital.

For anyone intersted, here is a list of art work by book with the page number in parenthesis.
